Privacy Policy
Effective July 15, 2026
SimpleWX is built to know as little about you as possible. There are no accounts, no advertising, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind. We never sell data — there is nothing to sell.
What the app stores on your device
Your saved locations, notification preferences, and cached weather data are stored on your device (and in your device's app group storage so the widget can read them). None of this is uploaded anywhere except as described below.
Push notifications
If you enable weather alert notifications, the app registers with our alert server so it can watch for alerts and notify you. That registration contains:
- your device's push notification token (an anonymous identifier issued by Apple — it does not identify you personally),
- the names and map coordinates of your saved locations, and which of them have notifications enabled,
- your notification preferences: watch/advisory settings, forecast discussion notifications, and Critical Alert settings (including your quiet-hours schedule, selected warning types, and your device's time zone, which is needed to honor quiet hours).
This information is used solely to deliver weather notifications. It is kept only while you are registered: if you disable notifications or remove all locations, the registration is deleted from the server. The server keeps no history of the notifications sent to you beyond a short-term record used to avoid sending duplicates.
If you never enable notifications, nothing is ever sent to our server except the weather data requests described below.
Your location
Location access is optional. If you grant it, your coordinates are used on your device to look up the weather where you are. You can use the entire app without granting location access by typing location names instead.
Weather data requests
To show you weather, the app requests data from public weather services. Like any internet request, these include the coordinates of the place you're asking about and your IP address, and are subject to those services' own policies:
- National Weather Service / NOAA — forecasts, alerts, radar, and forecast discussions
- Aviation Weather Center — current conditions (METAR observations)
- Iowa Environmental Mesonet — precipitation discussion data
- OpenStreetMap Nominatim — converting a place name you type into map coordinates
- sunrise-sunset.org — sunrise and sunset times
- Our alert server — forecast discussions and air quality data (proxied from Open-Meteo), so your device doesn't need to contact additional services directly
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
